Dental anxiety is not uncommon. In fact, some studies show that up to 75% of Americans experience some level of dental-related fear and 20% avoid dental care because of it. If you have a fear of dental treatment, we want you to know that making you feel comfortable and safe at our office is a priority. Whatever your individual level of anxiety may be, Dr. Clanton and his staff is committed to making sure that your visit is as comfortable, quick, and easy as possible. Here are a few solutions for easing dental anxiety:
Communication
Informing us as to what you are afraid of is a great place to start. Often we can ease fears by simply giving you correct or updated information about your procedure. We will always keep you informed before, during, and after your treatment, making sure that you understand what is going on and why we are doing it.
Calming Techniques
Many patients find it helpful to practice controlled breathing during their treatment or to find distraction inside the room. Our office provides wall-mounted monitors with relaxing scenic photography.
Listening to Music
With most procedures, the use of personal headphones and music is allowed. This is a great way to keep calm while receiving treatment.
Taking Breaks
Let us know at any time when you would like to take a short break during treatment.
Bring Support
Many patients feel more comfortable when they have a close friend or family member accompany them during their dental visit. We always welcome our patients to bring anyone with them that can help ease the stress of the appointment.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” can be used for relaxation/sedation. Read more about this option in the section “Nitrous Oxide“.
